Business & Economic Development Services

Business services provides critical management and technical assistance to small businesses owned by women and people of color. Training, seminars, workshops and executive leadership training programs include the following topics:

The program also organizes and connects diverse communities and businesses with University resources, such as intellectual property, technology transfer, research and development to improve the socioeconomic conditions of urban communities. This program also identifies and mobilizes community partners and/or other resources that also can provide assistance.

Management Assistance Program (MAP) for Small Businesses

The Office for Business & Community Economic Development and the Carlson School of Management have partnered to offer a unique program that provides management and technical assistance to businesses owned by women, people of color, and people with disabilities. This program focuses on helping these businesses build capacity and improve profitability; it also assists them in accomplishing critical management and operational objectives. Carlson School of Management MBA students are used to provide technical services and assistance to these firms. Business field projects are selected via application, MBA students are selected and assigned to a consulting team, and then individual consulting teams are matched with the appropriate business field project. Services provided include market research and analysis, feasibility studies, human resources management, marketing and business plan development, finance and accounting, operations management, information technology development, and strategic planning.

Management & Technical Assistance Program (MTAP) for Nonprofits

This program helps nonprofit organizations that serve Minnesota communities build capacity and enhance their performance and effectiveness. The program consists of three primary service components: convening, technical assistance, and executive leadership development. The convening component conducts symposiums, seminars, and/or conferences that focus on topics such as best practices, nonprofit politics and funding, and team building. The technical assistance component will use Carlson School of Management students and faculty to provide management and technical assistance in areas such as finance, marketing, strategic planning, human resource administration, program development, research, and technology. The leadership component provides training and development for board members, nonprofit executives, and key employees of these organizations.

Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP)

This program is designed to teach executives key leadership skills that can help them build company capacity and performance, develop and communicate a competitive vision, formulate strategies, manage teams, analyze the competition, and assess key business trends. The learning objectives are designed to address the highly sensitive and difficult issues facing business owners who desire to take their companies to the next level. Participants acquire new perspectives and research-based concepts, as well as learn how to develop action plans for leading innovation and organizational renewal. Participants will explore successful leadership styles and analyze their effectiveness in all facets of managing and leading a business by examining real-life situations.

Small-Business Forum Series

This series offers quarterly educational and networking forums that provide small-business owners with practical insights, information, and tools that will position them to stay competitive in today’s rapidly changing business environment. This forum specifically addresses the special needs of small businesses, and connects them with viable financial and business development resources. The series consists of training workshops, guest speakers, and networking opportunities. This series is offered through a collaboration with the banking industry and government.
