| The
Office for Business & Community Economic Development was
created by the Board of Regents in 1999 to advance the University’s
interests in promoting economic development and employment
and training opportunities for historically underserved communities.
The regents saw a unique opportunity for the University to
play a significant role in improving the quality of life and
conditions of disenfranchised neighborhoods through programs
and initiatives designed to foster business, community, and
economic development. |

In
only a few years this effort has grown from a single program
to a University office with nine programs and four units.
The Office for Business and Community Economic Development,
which is charged with promoting economic opportunities for
historically underrepresented groups, has doubled the University’s
purchases from emerging small businesses; created more than
1,300 employment opportunities for women, people of color,
and people with disabilities on University construction projects;
and offered management and technical assistance services that
have helped small businesses build capacity. |
