About Us

OUR HISTORY

The Office for Business & Community Economic Development was created by the Board of Regents in 1999 to advance the University’s interests in promoting economic development and employment and training opportunities for historically underserved communities. The regents saw a unique opportunity for the University to play a significant role in improving the quality of life and conditions of disenfranchised neighborhoods through programs and initiatives designed to foster business, community, and economic development.

In only a few years this effort has grown from a single program to a University office with nine programs and four units. The Office for Business and Community Economic Development, which is charged with promoting economic opportunities for historically underrepresented groups, has doubled the University’s purchases from emerging small businesses; created more than 1,300 employment opportunities for women, people of color, and people with disabilities on University construction projects; and offered management and technical assistance services that have helped small businesses build capacity.
The office also has created a model partnership with Comcast Cable that provides scholarships and internships for students of color over the next 10 years. This partnership also includes major funding for leadership training and other business development initiatives that support emerging small businesses.

The partnership with Comcast Cable is a model for how the public and private sectors can work together to help strengthen communities. The Office for Business & Community Economic Development is committed to continuing to develop such partnerships, grow current programs, identify community needs and develop innovative programs and services to help meet those needs.

The University of Minnesota is an equal opportunity educator and employer.
